Rhopalostylis sapida (Nikau Palm) is New Zealand’s only native palm, valued for its elegant form, feather-like fronds, and tropical appearance. It’s ideal as a feature plant in gardens, parks, and coastal or sheltered landscapes.
 
Description
Evergreen palm tree with a slender, smooth trunk and crown of arching, feather-like fronds
Fronds are bright green, up to 3 metres long, giving a tropical appearance
Produces small cream flowers, followed by bright red berries
Typically grows 10–15 metres high, occasionally taller in optimal conditions
Long-lived, hardy, and iconic in New Zealand landscapes
 
Growing Conditions
Thrives in full sun to partial shade
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil, tolerates clay or sandy soils
Moderate watering; drought-tolerant once established
Hardy to frost (young plants may need protection), wind, and coastal exposure
Low maintenance; minimal pruning, mainly removing old fronds
