Rhopalostylis sapida (Nikau Palm) is New Zealand’s only native palm, valued for its elegant form, feather-like fronds, and tropical appearance. It’s ideal as a feature plant in gardens, parks, and coastal or sheltered landscapes.

 

Description

  • Evergreen palm tree with a slender, smooth trunk and crown of arching, feather-like fronds

  • Fronds are bright green, up to 3 metres long, giving a tropical appearance

  • Produces small cream flowers, followed by bright red berries

  • Typically grows 10–15 metres high, occasionally taller in optimal conditions

  • Long-lived, hardy, and iconic in New Zealand landscapes

 

Growing Conditions

  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade

  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil, tolerates clay or sandy soils

  • Moderate watering; drought-tolerant once established

  • Hardy to frost (young plants may need protection), wind, and coastal exposure

  • Low maintenance; minimal pruning, mainly removing old fronds
