Phormium tenax (Harakeke / New Zealand Flax) is an iconic native plant of New Zealand, renowned for its bold, upright leaves and dramatic architectural form. It’s hardy, versatile, and culturally significant.

 

Description

  • Evergreen clump-forming flax with upright, sword-like leaves

  • Leaves are long, tough, and dark green to bronze, often with a glossy finish

  • Produces tall flower spikes with nectar-rich tubular flowers attracting birds

  • Can grow 2–3 metres high with leaves, flower spikes up to 4 metres

  • Long-lived and low-maintenance once established

 

Growing Conditions
