Kunzea robusta (Kānuka) is a hardy New Zealand native tree known for its airy canopy, fine foliage, and clouds of small white flowers. It has a lighter, more open appearance than mānuka and brings a natural, elegant feel to landscapes.

 

Description

  • Evergreen native tree or large shrub with an open, spreading habit

  • Fine, soft foliage with small aromatic leaves

  • Produces masses of small white flowers in summer

  • Typically grows 8–15 metres in natural settings (smaller in gardens)

  • Smooth to flaky grey-brown bark adds character

 

Growing Conditions

  • Thrives in full sun

  • Prefers well-drained soil, including poor or sandy soils

  • Drought-tolerant once established

  • Hardy to frost, wind, and coastal exposure

  • Very low maintenance; minimal pruning required
