Description

  • Low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub with dense, glossy foliage

  • Attractive variegated leaves, featuring green centres with prominent golden-yellow margins and markings

  • Develops a dense, mat-forming habit, typically reaching around 30–50 cm high and spreading up to 1.5–2 m wide

  • Produces small, inconspicuous flowers, followed by small berries on female plants where pollination occurs

  • Attractive gold and green foliage provides year-round colour

  • Hardy and relatively fast-growing once established

Growing Conditions

  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade; best foliage colour generally develops with good sunlight

  • Prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types

  • Moderate watering during establishment; reasonably drought-tolerant once established

  • Tolerates wind and coastal conditions, making it well suited to exposed NZ sites

  • Generally low maintenance; prune lightly if required to maintain shape or encourage denser growth

  • Suitable for NZ conditions, including cooler areas, although protection from severe frost is beneficial when young

Uses in Landscaping

  • Excellent groundcover for banks, slopes, and large garden areas

  • Ideal for coastal gardens, rockeries, borders, and low-maintenance landscapes

  • Particularly effective as a mass planting, where its gold-and-green foliage creates strong visual impact

  • Useful for erosion control on slopes and banks

  • Suitable for residential gardens, commercial landscaping, parks, and roadside plantings

  • Works well alongside other native groundcovers, grasses, shrubs, and coastal plants

  • A good choice where year-round foliage colour and a spreading habit are desired
