Chionochloa flavicans, commonly known as Snow Tussock or Mountain Tussock, is a beautiful and hardy tussock grass native to New Zealand. 



  • Growth Habit: Chionochloa flavicans is a perennial grass with a clumping or tussock-forming growth habit. The tussocks can vary in size and may reach a height of 1 to 2 meters or more, depending on the growing conditions.
  • Leaves: The leaves of Snow Tussock are long, slender, and usually silvery or bluish-green in color. They have a fine and delicate texture, adding to the plant's ornamental appeal.
  • Flowers: In late spring to early summer, Chionochloa flavicans produces tall, graceful flower spikes that rise above the tussocks. The flower spikes are feathery and may have a silvery appearance.


Growing Conditions:

  • Watering: Chionochloa flavicans is relatively drought-tolerant once established. However, regular watering during dry spells will help maintain its health and appearance.
  • Temperature: This grass is well-suited for temperate climates and can tolerate cool temperatures. It is not suitable for extremely cold or freezing conditions.
  • Maintenance: Chionochloa flavicans is generally low-maintenance. Remove any dead or discolored leaves to keep the tussocks looking tidy.
